LEADERSHIP: What Positive Differences Have You Made as an Effective [Quality] Leader?

Effective [ quality ] leadership here [ as in my self-refinement book In the Game: Careers & Executives ] is defined as: Consistently effectuating positive differences and change.

None of us start out as effective [ quality ] leaders. We’re human. Thus, all of us are imperfect, flawed. However, people are capable of transforming into effective [quality] leaders when they to choose to improve as individuals.

When we choose self-refinement, we work on ourselves to be better as individuals. That could mean professional help ( counseling, coaching, therapy ), indulgence of self-help tools, or accepting constructive feedback from other people.

Upon becoming effective [ quality ] leaders we begin to influence positive change or differences. Not just for select individuals, such as people we like or have a connection with or who look like us, we make it our duty to directly affect positive change and differences for everyone we are responsible for leading.

Backdrop: When I was writing the chapter about effective [ quality ] leadership in my self-refinement book Careers & Executives, I asked a few people in leadership roles this question: “What makes you an effective leader?” This was going the chapter topic question.

Those leaders quickly rattled off a list of their leadership qualities.

A simple list of leadership qualities didn’t work for what I was looking for. That’s because I wanted the chapter about effective leadership to prick the hearts of people in leadership positions. As a result, the chapter title had to make leaders think.

I gave it some more thought and asked those same people in leadership roles another question: “What differences have you made as an effective leader?”

That question was met with silence.

I surmised it was because the question “What differences have you made as an effective leader?”made them think—and me as well for that matter. None of us were able to quickly answer the question.

With that question I had found a way breathe inspiration into the chapter about effective [ quality ] leadership, making it richer.

As a quality leader, whether in your home and/or work what positive change or have you made as an effective leader?

{

A few positive differences and changes I have made as an effective [ quality ] leader:

  • At home, I stabilized our home environment, free from non-sense and drama. Developing a greatly supportive, trusting, spiritual, loving home environment enabled me train up my son to become a free-thinking, financially savvy, productive member of society—my angel makes me a proud mother.
  • In the workplace,
    • my teams appreciate the open and supportive platform I have created for anyone to talk to me about anything, from personal to work related issues to the heaviest topics – a result of my leadership qualities. Our open, supportive space enables to quickly resolve problems and get blockers removed.
    • when requested I assist individuals in their journey to remove personal baggage so they are better able to improve their mental and emotional health, which ultimately makes them better for themselves, their personal relationships, their team, and the project.
    • as one collective team our delivery rate has increased by 40% and remains at a constant average of ~95% by designing dynamic strategies and helping my teams mature in agility.
    • making other people feel comfortable speaking up by not being afraid to speak up first, such as when senior leadership ask us what we think.
    • NOTE: Currently, I am playing the role of Technical Product Management/Agile Coach/Scrum Master for 5 Teams. My life & work experiences and Professional Certified Coach experiences enable me to help myself and others.
