Effective [ quality ] leadership here [ as in my self-refinement book In the Game: Careers & Executives ] is defined as: Consistently effectuating positive differences and change.

Is there a lot of grey when it comes to practicing effective [ quality ] leadership?

I don’t personally think so.

Sure, none of us is perfect! That’s understandable, fair and acceptable.

When it comes to practicing effective [ quality ] leadership,

  • Leaders either strive to be effective in everything they do for everyone they’re responsible for leading or they don’t.
  • Leaders are either practice effective [quality] daily for everyone they’re responsible for leading or they do not.
  • Either leaders give a damn [ care ] about the success of each person they are responsible for leading or they don’t.
  • Leaders either give a damn [ care ] about the short-term and long-term impact they make on their organization or they do not.
  • People in leadership roles either want to see and do the best for everyone they are responsible for leading and their organization or they do not.
  • Either leaders hold themselves and other leaders, including human resources, accountable or they don’t.
  • Executive leaders either take full ownership to ensure that they themselves and other leaders are effective [ quality ] leaders or they do not.

A few grey areas I can think of:

  • One of the biggest grey areas, is in a leader’s transition phase to becoming an effective [quality] leader. Perhaps the person is figuring things out – from identifying and acknowledging and addressing their shortcomings strategizing to how to increase their leadership effectiveness [quality] for everyone they’re responsible for leading and their organization.
  • An effective [ quality ] leader could backslide – should be a rarity of course. After all, we are all human so messing up happens. We as effective [ quality ] leaders quickly self-correct/adjust to get back on-track; because we want to always be and do our best, and people depend on us.
  • Effective [ quality ] leaders might not always know the end results of their efforts, such as helping people in need who don’t circle back around to share the outcome of their situations or their appreciation.

What other grey areas can you think of regarding leaders practicing effective [ quality ] leadership or not?
